Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Good News! A Returned Veteran of The Great War resting in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery to have his Honour and Dignity restored.

Private Thomas Francis Sheridan, 44th Battalion (Reg No-2148A), fettler from Coorow via Perenjori, Western Australia and 12 Railway Street, Newcastle West, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the Thursday afternoon of the 10th May 1945, age 68. CATHOLIC 2-55. 120.

Born at Woolloomooloo, New South Wales on the 22nd November 1876 to Henry Lawrence and Elizabeth Sheridan nee Healy of 94 Darby Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, Thomas enlisted May 1916 at Perth, Western Australia.

Admitted to hospital 11.9.1917 (defective vision), 3.1.1919 (influenza), 25.1.1919 (trench fever), Thomas was invalided home May 1919, being discharged on the 10th July 1919.

I located Mr. Sheridan resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so August 2020 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at his gravesite to honour his service and sacrifice with the 1st A.I.F.

Served as a Permanent Soldier for 5 years in R.A.G.A. and 8 years on the Instructional Staff, Australian Military Forces.

I submitted an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip September 2021, and this was accepted September 2021.

I will post photos when gravesite complete.

Lest We Forget.
