Leading Aircraftman Walter James Laird (Service No:154381) enlisted at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Cabinetmaker. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman, he was attached to 2 Central Recovery Depot Richmond at Discharge on 18 October 1946.
Wally was born in Mitcham, South Australia in 1904, sixth of eight children of George Laird (b1867 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Pauline Stevens (b1873 in Samford, QLD). George immigrated in 1888, arriving in Moreton Bay, QLD on board the Cheyebassa and in 1893 he and Pauline married in Samford. In 1898 the family relocated to South Australia, where George and Pauline raised their family.
Wally started work as a Apprentice Cabinetmaker after high school, and served in the Citizen Forces (1926/1929). In 1931 in Adelaide, Wally married Daphne Evelyn Morris (b1909 at Port Lincoln, South Australia). Wally and Daphne settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Wally worked as a Cabinetmaker with Austral Furniture Coy. Daphne died in 1987 and Wally in 1997.
