Raymond Charles Grantham
Number 15406 L.A.C Dept Motor Transport Australian Infantry Forces (A.I.F.)
Raymond joined up at the age of 18 years. He trained at Shepperton in 1944 and was sent to Darwin for about 12 months. His last posting was at Winnellie Darwin.
On his way home to Sydney after the war he went by way of Rabaul on the H.M.A.S. "Manoora". The ship was carrying Japanese prisoners of war.
After his discharge, Ray arrived home and returned to his job with the railways. However, Ray only worked for one week before he had an accident with his motorbike which put him in hospital. After recovery Ray returned to the railways but this time as a Porter.
An opportunity came in 1946 for a job with Adelaide Electric, now known as E.T.S.A.
Another important event in 1946, was his marriage to Vera Maud Rayson. Ray and Vera first lived at Edwardstown and then Mt Barker. Ray received a promotion and transferred to Gladstone, still working for E.T.S.A. He was promoted to a Supervisor and sent to Lameroo.
He was later promoted to a Grade Three Supervisor and shifted to Murray Bridge.
In all, Ray worked for E.T.S.A. for 39 years. He retired in 1985 and continued to live at Murray Bridge. Ray and Vera had three children Lorraine, Raylene and Richard.
