Add my storyBiography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon
He was educated at Gt. Chishill now in South Cambridgeshire. He emigrated to Australia when he was about 21 years old. Prior to enlistment he worked "on the teams" in Brisbane. Enlisted Kedron Park, Queensland, Australia.
He was 26 and the son of Timothy and Ada Julia Rogers, of The Hall Lane, Great Chishill. Brother of Frank Thomas, and Bertie who also fell (they served with British forces).
Bertie’s details are:
Private, 15928, 1st Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment. 5th Division. Killed in action near Achiet-Le-Grand 23rd August 1918. Born in Great Chishill and enlisted in Royston. Buried in Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension F.518
Frank’s details are:
Private 24263 7th Bn., Suffolk Regiment who died on Sunday, 20th August 1916. Age 20. Buried in GREAT CHISHILL (ST. SWITHIN) CHURCHYARD, Cambridgeshire. At East end of church.
He is commemorated, along with his brothers, on the Great Chishill war memorial which stands at the cross-roads of Heydon Road, Hall Lane, Barley Road and May Street. The memorial takes the form of an obelisk set into a roadside niche in the churchyard wall.
