Leading Aircraftman Kenneth Murray Whitrod (Service No:152371) initially served as a Cadet in the Air Training Corps (ATC) with 4 Wing HQ  and 71 Squadron before enlisting in the RAAF on 22 February 1944 at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Technical, re mustered as Wireless Assistant. Leading Aircraftman Whitrod was posted in the Northern Territory from 12 April 1945 to 14 March 1946 - at Strauss with 549 Squadron, Coomallie Creek with 87 Squadron, in Darwin with No 2 Flying Boat Maintenance Unit (FBMU) and 12 Aircraft Repair Depot (ARD), and at 58 Mile with 5 RIMU (Radar Branch). LAC Whitrod was attached to HQ North Western Area (NWA) at Discharge on 10 April 1946.

Ken was born in Edwardstown, South Australia in 1926, youngest of four children of Ernest Edward Whitrod (b1895 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia) and Olive Beatrice Pedler (b1897 in Lorqoun, Victoria). Ernest was a Driver in Adelaide in 1917 when he enlisted in the Army (Sapper; Service No:3677), and in 1918 he and Olive married in Adelaide, where they settled and raised their family. Ernest worked as a Labourer and   Storeman.

Ken was an Apprentice Electrical Fitter with the Municipal Tramways Trust when he enlisted in the Air Training Corps (ATC) in 1942. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, he completed his Apprenticeship and was working as an Electrical Fitter in Adelaide in 1949 when he married Aylis Rosslyn Reid (b1927 in Adelaide, South Australia). Ken and Aylis settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Ken worked as an Electrical Fitter. In 1950 he and Aylis worked at night with Ken's brother Dick, building their own homes - Dick's first in Black Forest and theirs next in Park Holme. Ken died in 2000.
