Clarrie’s only son Lyall had been working as a shop assistant for E. M. Horne in Koolunga for 2 years and 8 months. Having turned 18, he enlisted as a trainee technician in the RAAF at 5 Recruiting Office, Adelaide, on 21st December 1943. He was immediately posted to 1 Recruit Depot, Shepparton, Victoria for a month before returning to Adelaide to be trained as a fitter at 4 School of Technical Training. On completion of this three month course Lyall was transferred to 1 Engineering School, Ascot Vale, Melbourne, where he undertook a flight riggers course from 29 April until 1 August 1944. Remustered as a flight rigger Lyall was posted to 2 Air Observers School, Mt. Gambier, where, on 1 November he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman.
Lyall’s final posting was to 7 Operational Training Unit at Tocumwal in southern New South Wales where RAAF B-24 Liberator crews were trained. Lyall served here from 7 December 1944 until 20 May 1946 when he was transferred for discharge.
