Mateship
Claude Henriott and Bill Marsland went to the same Church, as you can see on the honour roll.
They were good mates and Claude had dated Bill's Sister Jessie for a while before the war. Bill and Claude used to go on long motorbike rides together.
In April 1944 they were on leave together having a beer, when Claude noticed Bill was not looking too well, he could see the signs of a malaria attack coming on. He took Bill to the Salvation Army who drove him to the Northfield hospital.
Two days later Claude started to shake and sweat uncontrollably at his wedding day.
The next morning he was admitted to the same hospital, and requested to be in the bed next to Bill. They stayed for about 2 weeks, and apparently the staff were very pleased when they were discharged because they played up quite a bit.
Back in New Guinea Bill was wounded in the left shoulder in action at Buna and was taken back to Popondetta in a jeep, driven by none other than his mate Claude.
