David Roger King (Roger) was born in Monash on the 25 January 1916, the son of Leslie Frank and Hilda Theodora (nee Zibbell) King. 

Roger attended school in Monash (near Berri, SA) completing the Qualifying Certificate and 1 year of High School. He enjoyed running with his brother, he also participated in athletics and football. Roger worked on fruit blocks near Monash and he also fished in the Franklin Harbour and Spencer Gulf. 

The King family moved to Whyalla where Roger’s father built houses while working for BHP. Roger completed a 4 year apprenticeship with RJ Barratt in Whyalla. Roger was helping his father build houses in Whyalla when he met Marjorie Kathleen Meta, and they married on the 23rd of March 1940. 

A carpenter, Roger King was 27 years old when he enlisted with the RAAF in November, 1943. At the time he had one son - Verran Russell King (born 18/11/41). Roger spent time at the No2 Flying Boat Repair Depot, repairing and overhauling flying boats. Roger and Marjorie had a daughter on 19/2/44 - Carlyne Meta King. Roger transferred to Darwin in September 1944 and served with the 112 Air Sea Rescue Flight. Remarks from the Trade Test Board in his service record state: ‘King a very competent carpenter and has had considerable experience with Marine Craft’. An Aircraftman Class 1 on enlistment, David Roger King was promoted Acting Corporal on 1/10/45, then Leading Aircraftman on 26/11/45 while serving with the 112 Air Sea Rescue Borneo. 

Roger King was discharged on the 8/1/46. After the war he worked in the PMG from 1950-1989. He and his family lived in Cowell and another 2 sons were born (David Leigh King and Paul Wayne King).  Roger umpired football and enjoyed photography.  He was in the Masonic Lodge and was the Grand Master for some time.  

After suffering with cancer, Roger died in 1991. He is buried at the Cowell cemetery.
