Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Percy and Ivy Muriel Buttery, of Norwood, South Australia

The sad and untimely death occured at Merredin on friday, 28th January of AC1 Geoffrey leighton Buttery of the RAAF Station.  The deceased was accorded an Air Force funeral at 4pm on Saturday, which was preceded by an impressive service at the Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.F. Whittle, who also administered the last sad rites.

Born in Norwood, South Australia, the late AC1 Buttery,  who was only 19 years of age, was always a popular member of the younger set in his home town, and took an active interest ini football and other healthy sport. The possessor of a strong bass voice, he was always a welcome acquisition to musical circles and had done considerable choir work. During his 6 months of service in the RAAF, 5 of which were spent at Merredin, he had endeared himself to a large circle of friends who deeply regret his untimely passing, and extend their sympathy to the bereaved parents (well  known and respected residents of Norwood) and other relatives. One brother is in the Air Force and the other in the Navy. On the day of the tragedy, the deceased accompanied his mates to a  dam, where he took his first swim since recovering from a recen attack of rheumatic fever, and apparently his strength failed him and he disappeared under the water. By the time his body was recovered life was found to be extinct. His remains were interred in the War Graves section of the Merredin cemetery and the Last Post was sounded by a bugler. The pall bearers were F/S  Pallett, Cpl. How, Cpl. Smith, LAC Dorfies, LAC Johnston, LAC Creagh, LAC Sullivan, and LAC Tamblyn, and LAC Trewennick South Australia. Floral tributes were received from Dad and Mum; Brothers and Sisters ; The Commanding- Officer and Members of the RAAF Station, Merredin ; Joy ; Mrs Hammby ; Officers and Personnel No 7 Hanger, RAAF, Merredin; Merredin Methodist Church; Rev and Mrs Whittle; Merredin branch Red Cross and Women's Auxiliary; Pam Moate. The funeral arrangements were carried out by L. A. Miller, funeral director of Fifth street.
