Youngest of three brothers who served in the military - Stanley and Ernest in the AIF WWI - Leading Aircraftman Gordon William Whitrod (Service No:140682) served in the Militia (1922) before enlisting in the RAAF on 6 July 1943 at No 5 Recruting Centre Adelaide as an Aircraftman I - mustered as a General Hand. Posted to 11 Operational Base Unit Townsville on 23 November 1943, Leading Aircraftman Whitrod served in Lae and Finschafen (1 January 1944 - 30 May 1945), and in Bougainville with 7 Airfield Construction Squadron (3 September 1945 - 15 April 1946). LAC Whitrod was attached to 7 Airfield Construction Squadron at Discharge on 3 May 1946.

Youngest of seven children (and a twin), Gordon was born in Plympton, Adelaide, South Australia in 1908 to Richard James Whitrod (b1873 in Kanmantoo, South Australia) and Frances (Fanny) Elizabeth Childs (b1873 in Victor Harbor, South Australia). Richard and Fanny married in 1893 in Adelaide, where they settled (Thebarton, Plympton) and raised their family and Richard worked as Bootmaker and as a Driver for Messrs Ryan & Sons of Plympton. 

Gordon worked in Magill as Cellarman for Penfolds, and in 1935 in Adelaide married Clare Ethel Rita Gunter (b1909 at Port Augusta, South Australia). Gordon and Clare settled in Adelaide (Magill) where they raised their family and Gordon worked as a Cellarman. Gordon died in 1989 and Clare died in 1997.
