Cpl. Keith Walter Werner, who lost his life on May 17th of this year on Morotai Island north of New Guinea, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hermann Werner, of Woodchester. He was born at Bowhill, on the River Murray, and came with his parents when they settled at Woodchester. He received his primary schooling at Woodchester, and on leaving that school, spent twelve months at the Strathalbyn High School. Prior to enlisting, he was assisting on his father's farm.
He enlisted in the R.A.A.F. on January 26th, 1943, and was only eighteen years of age. He received his early training at Sheppartoh, Sydney, Melbourne, Ascot Vale, and other places, and was posted to New Guinea 15 months ago as a driver in No. 4 Aviation Construction Squadron.
An exceptionally nice letter was received by his parents from the chaplain, with that unit, who said that Keith had accidentally lost his life while swimming, and extended to them and all his relatives, his deepest and sincere sympathy. He was liked by all his comrades, and anybody who came in contact with him. He concluded by saying that he had peacefully laid his remains to rest in the Morotai Cemetery.
In his home town Keith was a popular young lad, and liked by everybody, and it is hard to realise for us all that such a promising young youth has been taken from us.
Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents and Keith's two sisters, Irene and Norma.
His Life laid down for his country.
A memorial service was held in the Callington Lutheran Church on Sunday last, when Pastor Weckert officiated with an impressive service to a large gathering of relatives, and friends.
