Leading Aircraftman Charles Richard Roberts (Service No:122245) enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I on 27 January 1943 - mustered as a General Hand, remustered as Equipment Assistant. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 30 August 1943, LAC Roberts was attached to 1 Aircraft Performance Unit at Discharge on 30 April 1946. Siblings Ernest, Clarence, Allan and Howard also served in WWII.
Born in 1908 in Adelaide South Australia, Richie was fourth of ten children of Sydney Dean Roberts (b1878 in Dublin, South Australia) and Ellen Frances Emily Rose (b1881 at Reedbeds, South Australia). Sydney (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1901 in Windsor, South Australia and lived in Long Plains, Adelaide, Balaklava, Malalla and Medindie where they raised their family and Sydney worked as a Labourer.
Richie worked as a Maintenance Carpenter, Grocer/Shopkeeper and Transport Driver in Adelaide and served in the Citizen Forces from 1927 - 1929. In 1933 at Clarence Park in Adelaide, Richie married Thelma May Jones (b1908 in Moonta, South Australia). Richie and Thelma were living in Adelaide, where Richie was a Supervisor Schedule Control with general Mootors Holden when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1943. Richie died in Adelaide in 1967 and Thelma in 1973 in Moonta.
