Leading Aircraftman Ross Ward (Service No:115719) enlisted in the AIF at No5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide on 21 August 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee, re mustered as Flight Rigger then Carpenter Rigger. Promoted on 1 March 1944, LAC Ward served with 84 Operational Base Unit (OBU) in Borneo (Morotai and Labuan) from 11 May 1945 to 27 January 1946, and was attached to 84 OBU at Discharge on 4 March 1946. Father (Spencer Snr) served in WWI and brother (Spencer Jnr) served in WWII.
Ross was born at Mile End, Adelaide, South Australia in 1924, third of four children of Spencer Roy Ward (b1891 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia) and Susan Elizabeth Weekley (b1889 at Langhorne Creek, South Australia). Spencer was a Miner in Edithburgh in 1915 before he enlisted in the AIF, and married Susan in Adelaide that year. Following his Discharge, Spencer and Susan lived in Edithburgh and Port Adelaide, where they raised their family and Spencer was a Labourer and Carpenter and Joiner.
Ross was working in Adelaide as a Carpenter's Improver for EF Marshall of Wellard SA in 1942 when he enlisted in the RAAF. He was working in Adelaide in 1950 when he married Rhonda Yvonne Ingliss (b1926 in Wellard, Adelaide, South Australia). Ross and Rhonda lived in Adelaide and Blackwood in the Adelaide Hills, before settling at Moonta Bay by 1981 (NAA). Ross died in 1991 and Rhonda in 2009.
