Second of the six siblings (Adrian, Mercia, Ross, Clive, Joan and Gloria) who served in WWII, Aircraftwoman Mercia Viola Beryl Thomas (Service No:107460) enlisted in the WAAAF at No 5 Recruiting Station Adelaide on 30 November 1942 with No 1 WAAAF Depot - mustered as Mess Steward, re mustered as Stewardess. Aircraftwoman Thomas served with 5 HQ Laverton, and was attached to Wireless Telegraph Station Adelaide at Discharge on 19 February 1946.
Mercia was born in Glenelg, South Australia in 1915, second of seven children of Henry (George) Thomas (b1888 in Woollahra, New South Wales) and Harriet (Rose) Butler (b1891 in Glenelg, South Australia. In 1907 George was Reported as Missing from home, and he and Rose married in 1914 in Glenelg, South Australia where they settled and raised their family - six of their seven children served in WWII. George worked as a Labourer, Distiller and Tomato Grower.
Mercia worked as a Waitress in Glenelg, and was a Defence Worker (Richards Industries Ltd) in 1942 when she enlisted in the WAAAF. Following her Discharge in 1946, Mercia married Maurice Edward Wall (b1913 in Swan Reach, South Australia) in 1949 - Maurice served in the RAAF (Corporal; Service No:27862) in WWII. Mercia and Maurice settled in Adelaide, where they raised their daughter and Maurice was a Mechanic and later Gardener. Mercia died in 1970 and Maurice in 1982.
