Biography contributed by Evan Evans
From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Two Diggers of The Great War, a father resting at Sandgate Cemetery, unmarked grave, his son awaiting memorialisation.
68 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 31st August 1953, Private Joseph Weir Snr, 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-566), labourer from Gladstone Street and Lawson Street, Mudgee, New South Wales and 99 Lott Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 81. ANGLICAN 3-191. 21.
Born at Cornamucklagh, Drumcree, County Armagh, Northern Ireland on the 5th July 1872 to Joseph (1825-1908) and Mary Weir nee Harrington (1840-?); husband of Elizabeth Weir nee Sparks (married 1893, Ireland, died 1922, Bowral, N.S.W., age 47; also Constance Mary Weir nee Rickards (married 28.4.1934, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1954), Joseph enlisted November 1915 (age 43!) at Lithgow, N.S.W.
Three sons also served 1st A.I.F.
William (2nd Australian Field Artillery Brigade, Reg No-527, born 1893, died 1977), Joseph William Jnr (3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion, Reg No-6107, born 1896, DOW 7.10.1918, awaiting memorialisation same location), and George (1st Battalion, Reg No-7812, born 1897, died 1971).
Joseph returned home December 1917 (allowed to return home for family reasons and overage).
Discharge date unknown.
Welcome home to father Joseph (almost unreadable).
Mr. Weir’s name has been inscribed on the Mudgee's Roll of Honor, and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I located Joseph Snr resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so April 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
I also placed a memorial cross December 2019 for son Joseph Jnr, probably also forgotten.
Many thanks to Lynne Dalton for the family history.
Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
Lest We Forget.
