Corporal William Edward Hall (Service No:48029) enlisted at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide on 21 April 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Cook, re mustered as Butcher - and described in his Attestation Papers as 'excellent Tradesman .... outstanging Cook and Butcher' (NAA; 1942). In 1943 (January - April) Leading Aircraftman Hall was posted to Canada and Camp Myles Standish in Massachusetts USA, and then was attached to Air Force HQ - promoted to Corporal on 12 November 1943. Corporal Hall served with Advanced Flying and Refresher Unit (AFRU) Deniliquin in early 1945, and was attached to 4 Personnel Depot (Staff) at Discharge on 23 November 1945.
Bill was born in Marryatville, Adelaide, South Australia in 1908, eldest of four children of Albert (Bert) Frank Hall (b1887 in Magill, South Australia) and Stella Grace Mason (b1887 in Kensington, South Australia) Bert and Stella married in 1906 in Kensington, and settled in Adelaide where they raised their family and Bert worked as a Driver and Factory Hand.
Bill started work at the Okey Cafe in Glenelg - as a Kitchen Hand, Waiter and Food Preparer. In 1934 he started work at The Maylands Hotel as a Barman, and in 1937 was a Butcher in Adelaide (Mases Food Stores Adelaide). In 1943 in Melbourne he married Annie (Anne) Elizabeth Wilson (b1913 in Guildford, Western Australia) - Anne lived in Deniliquin and Auburn New South Wales while Bill was in the RAAF. Following his Discharge, Bill and Anne settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family. Anne died in 1978 and Bill died in 1980.
