Corporal William Alexander Whittaker 47773 Plant Operator of Number 7 Mobile Works Squadron drowned in the Raihu River, Aitape, New Guinea and is commemorated on the Lae Memorial
A bridge was built following his death as the river was too fast-flowing, the bridge was named Whittaker Bridge - information provided by book “We prepared the way - RAAF Airfield Construction Squadrons”
