The Bombing of Darwin
George was at Darwin during the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese. A story he told me was that he was one of those who released the prisoners from Fanny Bay Gaol and was one of those responsible for destroying the gaol's records so they would not fall into the hands of the Japanese. The R.A.A.F. did not discourage smoking, and this was later regarded as responsible for the failure of his health in later life. He had not previously been a smoker.
