James George Haslam's father was Major Thomas Wilfred Haslam OBE, who served with distinction in WW1, initially on Gallipoli. In August 1919, while awaiting repatriation to Australia, he learned of the death of his wife during the flu epidemic in Launceston. Their only child was James, who was then 10 years of age. Major Haslam apparently decided to remain in England, and his 10 year old son was adopted by an uncle, Joseph Auburn Haslam, a senior master at Prince Alfred College. In 1924 Mr Haslam became the first principal of King's College, and James spent the rest of his school life there. Mr & Mrs Haslam had two daughters of about the same age as James. In April 1936 James married Meta Patricia McCaffrey: they had three children, a son and two daughters. The family remained in Adelaide for many decades.
