Thomas left from Outer Harbour on the Seeang Bee on 13 July 1916 with his brother Frederick and was sent to France with his unit the 48th Battalion on 24 January 1917. He was reported missing on 11 April but it was later confirmed he had been captured as a prisoner of war and interned at Saltau in Germany. Thomas was hospitalised for 13 weeks in Germany prior to being interned. On 11 April Corporal Albert Richards reported “When attacking a trench at Bullecourt on 11-12th {April} we had to evacuate the trench and Tregoweth was left behind about 3 pm. ...Yes, I saw Tregoweth was wounded on head.” Thomas sent a telegram to the A.I.F. on 25 August 1918 stating, “Still well and receiving my parcels regularly.”
At the end of the war Thomas was repatriated to England, arriving there on 26 December 1918 from whence he was returned to Australia on the Plassey on 17 March 1919. He disembarked on 28 April and was discharged on 5 June.
