Lewis Arthur Francis was born on the 29th of May 1908 in Mannum, South Australia. He was married to Joyce Constance Francis and lived with her in Adelaide. Lewis religiously belonged to the Church of England.
Lewis enlisted into the RAAF on the 5th of July 1941. Before his days in the RAAF, his original trade was a Labourer. He underwent course training as a flight rigger and attended the No. 1 Engineering school in Ascot Vale on November 9th, 1941. Lewis was specially recommended for promotions and reclassification. During his enlistment, he ranked as a Leading Aircraftman before being discharged on the 23rd of November 1945.
