A man of service
George Sharp, of North Adelaide, was my godfather through a long friendship with my mother Carmel Phelan (later O'Reilly) and her husband Dominic O'Reilly.
George often told amusing stories of is time in the RAAF when he served as a personal attendant to senior officers in Darwin and the Pacific Islands. Before the war he was an attendant at the Adelaide Club and after returning from the War he rejoined the Club to eventually become a senior Maitre D' of one segment of this auspicious membership club. With his knowledge of protocol and military matters, George was occasionally seconded to Government House, to attend to finer details of special events.
in his retirement at his own meticulously kept home in Hill Street North Adelaide, George was assisted brilliantly by the RAAF Association of SA, whose members engaged several forms of medical and pension entitlements that he had never received. His service in the Pacific Islands had never been properly recognised until the dedicated association researchers came to his assistance.
George was at all times the absolute essence of a gentleman.
