Son of Florence May McCARTHY of 18 Bishop Avenue, Alberton, SA. Educated at Marist Brothers Alberton, Patrick was fond of swimming, rowing, westling and boxing. He won the 100 yard Handicap Stroke (School) at the City Baths, acted as cox for the Maiden Fours in P.A.R.C. sports and wond trophies at Morgan. He also won the Lightweight Boxing Championship of Somers R.A.A.F Camp. In civilian life he was apprenticed to the baking trade an enlisted in December 1940. His father Leading Seaman Thomas McCarthy served in the British Navy and was on the H.M.A.S. Sydney in the last war as Quartermaster and Gunlayer, taking part in the action against the 'Emden'.
