Sergeant Frederick Joseph Harding (Service No:28110) enlisted in the RAAF on 3 July 1940 at No 5A Mobile Recruiting Centre Broken Hill as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Mechanic, re mustered as Fitter. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman, then Corporal, he served with 13 Squadron Darwin, and was promoted to Sergeant on 12 September 1944. Sergeant Harding was attached to 2 Operational Training Unit (OTU) Mildura at Discharge on 28 January 1945.
Fred was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1911, youngest of three children of Frederick (Fred) Joseph Harding Snr (b1884 at Moonta Mines, South Australia) and Florence May Boyle (b1885 in Adelaide, South Australia). Fred Snr (a Telegraph Messenger) and Florence married in 1907 in Broken Hill, where they settled and raised their family and Fred Snr worked as a Moulder at Hoopers Foundry.
Fred worked for The Barrier Truth Daily Newspaper in Broken Hill as a Linotype Mechanic and General Mechanic before enlisting in the RAAF in 1940. Following his Discharge in 1945, Fred settled in Adelaide, and was working as a Fitter in 1948 when he married Sylvia Joy Sparkes (b1926 in Keswick, South Australia). Fred and Sylvia settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family. Fred died in 1999 and Sylvia died in 2019.
