Biography

Awarded the Military Medal

"These men (ROBERTS and 2074 A. SOUTHAM) displayed courage and initiative of the highest order in establishing and maintaining communications between their Battery and the F.O.O.'s during the operations of the 8th and 9th August 1918. In front of HAMEL - VILLERS BRETONNEUX. On several occasions they repaired the telephone lines under heavy fire, salving German wire for the purpose, and displaying a total disregard of personal safety in the performance of their duty. When telephonic communication became impossible, they acted as runners, passing through heavy machine gun and rifle fire at close range. The courage and devotion to duty of these men are deserving of special recognition." Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 61 Date: 23 May 1919

"GUNNER THOMAS ROBERTS.

Mrs S. Roberts, of Beaufort, on Saturday received the sad tidings of the death from wounds of her son, Gnr. Thomas Roberts. The fallen soldier was about 22 years of age, and a native of Beaufort. He enlisted early in the war, but was invalided home from Egypt owing to illness and discharged. He again enlisted about two years ago and went to France. Deep sympathy is felt with Mrs. Roberts, who is a widow, and whose only other son (Gnr. J. E. Roberts) was killed in action in France about 18 months ago. On Sunday the flag at the Shire Hall, Beaufort, was flown at half-mast as a last tribute of respect to the deceased." - from the Ballarat Courier 18 Nov 1918 (nla.gov.au)
