John was the youngest of five children of Francis (Frank) Ignatius Cooney (b1876 in Hindmarsh, South Australia) and Alice Maud Read (b1883 at Kadina, SA). Frank - a Labourer - and Alice married in 1903 in Dales, SA. Frank served in WWI as a Private (Service No:3785).

John started work as a Bakehouse Assistant in 1929 and by 1933 was a Yellow Cab Driver. In 1936 he married Neta Alice Moss (b1914 in Adelaide, SA) and became a Motor Mechanic.

In Jamuary 1940 John enlisted in the RAAF (Service No: 8006) and served as an Aircraftman, Leading Aircraftman and Corporal in Darwin and the South West Pacific Region (2 Squadron). He was Discharged in October 1945.

Returning to Adelaide, SA John worked as a Mechanic and Fitter with Richards Industries before becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Australian National Airways in 1949. John died in 1978 and Neta in 2009.
