William Thomas Charles SAUNDERS

WILLIAM THOMAS CHARLES SAUNDERS, born 10 July 1906 in Crystal Brook, South Australia enlisted for service WW2 on 1 July 1940 at Wayville, SA. His Next of Kin was his brother, Frederick Saunders. Initially he was issued Service No. SX8522 but at some point that was changed to 49001. His WW2 service ended 12 May 1948. During this period he was enrolled in the Interim Army from 1 July 1947 to 12 May 1948 and then the Australian Regular Army Special Reserve from 13 May 1948 to 9 February 1962.


We believe he served in north Africa and the Pacific, Japan in the Occupation Forces, and in Korea prior to returning to Australia where he finished is Army career at Warradale Army Barracks. He was award the following Medals:

Africa Star

Pacific Star

Defence Medal

War Medal 1939/45

United Nations Service Medal (Korea)

Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

Returned from Active Service Badge

He is buried in Derrick Gardens, Centennial Park Cemetery, his memorial plaque stating he was a member of 2/43rd Battalion although his WW2 Service Certificate supplied by DVA says he was with 28 Field Company at discharge in 1948.
