In March 1943 Lieutenant Colonel Cardale NX483 of the 31st Battalion was a passenger aboard RAAF De Havilland Dragon A34-24 when it crashed in Freshwater Gorge near Cairns during a flight from Cairns to Mareeba
The RAAF pilot, Sergeant McColl 405796, died in the crash along with two Army officers.
Lt-Col Cardale and AC Appleby 412876 RAAF crewman were found four days after the crash wandering around in the bush.
