Died on this date – 9th March.... John Joseph McCallam was born at Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia around 1891. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 5th January, 1916 as a 24 year old, single, Labourer from Littlemore Siding, Boyne Valley Line, Queensland.

Private McCallam embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Port Melbourne (A16) on 21st October, 1916 with 4th Reinforcements of 3rd Pioneer Battalion & disembarked at Devonport, England on 28th December, 1916 where he would receive further training before being sent to the War Front.

Private McCallam was posted to Pioneer Infantry Training Battalion at Larkhill, Wiltshire from Australia.
Private John Joseph McCallum was admitted to Hospital on 1st January, 1917 for observation, seriously ill, as it was not yet determined his illness.

Private John Joseph McCallum died at 9.40 p.m. on 9th March, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire from a Duodenal Ulcer.

He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
