The fifth of seven children, Edward was born in 1916 in Myanmar to James Horatio Utting (b1880 in Yorkshire, England) and Elna Haswell (b1886 in Myanmar). James (a Master Mariner and River Pilot) and Elna married in Rangoon, Burma in 1908 and raised their family in Mawlamyine, Myanmar where James was a River Pilot. The family arrived in Fremantle WA in 1936 on board the Narkunda and settled in Cottesloe, Fremantle WA. James and his six sons served in WWII - Richard and Peter were KiA.

Edward was working as a Geologist in Whyalla, South Australia in 1942 when he married Margaret Beatrice White (b1920 in Perth WA) in Adelaide, South Australia. Edward enlisted in the ACMF on 28 May 1942 (Private; Service No:S72592) and was attached to 6 Battalion VDC when he was Discharged on 16 December 1942 (unable to attend Parades).

By 1958 Edward and Margaret had left Whyalla, South Australia and settled in Cottesloe, Fremantle WA where Edward was a Geologist. Margaret died in 2009 and Edward in 2012.
