Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
66 years ago today, on the 14th November 1956, Private Henry Robert William O’Sullivan, 2nd Battalion (Reg No’s-508 & 7300), labourer from 162 Darby Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-39. 122.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 4th July 1896 to James and Rose Annie (Ann) O'Sullivan; husband of Helena O'Sullivan nee Kelly or Disney (married 1935, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1950, sleeping here), Henry enlisted on the 18th July 1915 with the 30th Battalion (Reg No-508) at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Discharged 30.9.1915 (not likely to become an efficient soldier).
Reenlisted 31.1.1917, Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 23.12.1917 (impetigo - skin infection).
Henry returned home on the 12th March 1920, being discharged on the same day.
Not eligible for War Medals.
Mr. O’Sullivan’s name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll and the Newcastle Wharf Labourers' Union Roll of Honor - photo, unveiled date unknown, 70 names inscribed, only 3 denoted as Fallen, located at the Newcastle Maritime Museum, 3 Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle, N.S.W.
Henry’s name has not been inscribed on the headstone plaque with wife Helena, so June 2016 I erected a cross at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
A Plaque shall be placed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.
Older brother James Mortimer (born 1886, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, from 162 and 168 Darby Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., 30th & 2nd Battalions, Reg No-7301, enlisted 18.7.1915, Liverpool, N.S.W., died 25.4.1925, age 38, also resting at the cemetery with parents. CATHOLIC 1-07. 62.
Older brother Richard Paul (born 1894, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, from 162 Darby Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., 2nd Battalion, Reg No-7302, died 18.10.1963, age 69, also resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 3-88. 128.
