Alec was the eldest of five children of Thomas Mauger Selway (b1877 in Stepney, South Australia) and Emilia Louisa Pauline Schottelius (b1879 in Norwood, South Australia). Thomas (a Butcher) and Emilia married in 1897 in Adelaide, SA where they settled and raised their family.

Alec was a Butcher in Adelaide SA in 1917 when he married Dorothy Adelaide Ethel Pierce (b1898 in Kensington, SA). In March 1943 Alec enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:S70178) and was attached to 3 Battalion VDC when he was Discharged in October 1945.

Alec died in 1967 and Dorothy in 1998.
