Private Ernest Sydney Roberts (Service No:S66288) served in the ACMF with 4th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) from 5 April 1942 to 9 August 1944. Siblings Clarence, Charles, Allan and Howard also served in WWII.

Ernie was born in 1902 at Long Plains, Mallala in South Australia, eldest of ten children of Sydney Dean Roberts (b1878 in Dublin, South Australia) and Ellen Frances Emily Rose (b1881 at Reedbeds, South Australia). Sydney (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1901 in Windsor, South Australia and lived in Adelaide, Balaclava nr the Wakefield River, Mallala and Medindie where they raised their family and Sydney worked as a Labourer.

Ernie (who was blind in his left eye) worked as a Fisherman and Agent, and in 1927 at Montacute in the Adelaide Hills married Gertrude May Thomas (b1905 in Montacute, South Australia). Ernie and Gertrude settled at Willunga, Onkaparinga where Ernie was a Fisherman, Agent and Motor Driver. Gertrude died in 1963 and Ernie in 1976.
