Don enlisted in 1917 he saw service in France and Egypt with 3rd Division Artillery.  He joined the Returned Services League upon his discharge in NSW he then moved to Souith Australia. In South Australia he joined the Brighton sub branch until he moved to Linden Park and transferred to Burnside. On the RSL Hospital commitee he served as secretary and treasurer from 1942 to 1954,  the committee nominated him for a Life Membership of RSL which he granted. He was made a sergeant in the VDC during WW11.  His son Alex served in the RAAF an was on active service in Maylaya.  He was killed in an accident in Sale in 1954. Don Ptichard served the League as the Chief Executive Officer from 1941, becoming a accountant the following year.  In 1954 he was appointed State Secretary
