Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Life Before the War

Leonard Scott Newbold was born in Mansfield England on April 12th 1895. He grew up with his mother Mrs Minnie Newbold. As he grew up, he remained single, emigrated to Australia, and decided to get a occupation as a station hand which is a person that works with large groups of sheep or cattle. Leonard had never done anything regarding the military service before.

Leonard Newbold enlisted into military service on the 4th of May 1916. He filled out all the forms he had to and he got medically tested to see if he was able to go to war. Once everything was checked out, Leonard was assigned to the unit 32nd Battalion and was then embarked at the age of 21 from Adelaide, South Australia on board the HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 12th of August 1916.

After arriving in England, Newbold then hopped on The Princess Clementine from Folkestone to France on the 30/12/1916. After several months he got wounded (gunshot wound) on the 21/10/1917 and had to go to hospital.

Once Leonard's wound healed up, on the 3/1/1918 he re-joined the same unit and served through the remainder of the war. He embarked on a boat to England on the 12th of May 1919. Leonard spent a few days in his home town Mansfield before leaving on another boat back to Australia Port Melbourne on the 18th of May 1919.

After the War

Leonard came back to Australia and got discharged from the military on the 2nd of October 1919. He served for a time in the Volunteer Defence Corps in the Second World War. He lived his life to the fullest and sadly passed away on the 16th of August 1966.
