Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Sydney George Herbert BRAIN, (Service Number 6227) born in Glebe, was a 32-year-old furnaceman at the Randwick Tramway Workshops when he enlisted in the AIF at Sydney in May 1916. He had been employed by the Tramways as a labourer in 1912, rising to furnaceman in 1913.
He trained with the Dubbo Depot Battalion and later at Liverpool before being sent to England by the ‘Euripides’, landing at Plymouth in October 1916. Sent to France with his unit in February 1917, he had two weeks in hospital with trench feet in May, a month at a training school at the end of the year, and two weeks leave in England thereafter, before re-joining his battalion in February 1918. He was killed in action on 8 May 1918, and buried at Borre British Cemetery, 1½ miles E of Hazebrouck.
Pensions were granted by the military authorities for his widow and five children.
