Biography

Son of Sidney Herbert Frederick BECKWITH and Mary Ada nee LOVELL

Sydney Arthur William Beckwith was born on 7th of February 1894, in Adelaide, South Australia. Hi mother was Mrs Mary Ada Beckwith (whom he listed as his next of kin on his enlistment forms). Beckwith’s address was 176 Wright Street, Adelaide, South Australia. As stated in his description upon enlistment, his religion was Church of England, and he had a fresh complexion, blue eyes, fair hair and he was 5 foot and 5 and a half inches tall. His marital status was single.

Beckwith enlisted in the A.I.F as a Private in Adelaide on the 16th of August 1915, at 22 years of age. He embarked from Adelaide on 11th of January 1916 on board the HMAT Ballarat, ship number A30.

He joined the 50th Battalion in Egypt and was sent to the Western Front in June 1916. 

On the 5th of April 1919 Beckwith embarked and commenced his return to Australia on a boat called “Armagh” and disembarked in Adelaide on the 16th of May 1919. He was discharged on the 5th of May 1919, before he disembarked in Adelaide. 

Sydney Arthur William Beckwith died at the age of 80 on the 27th of November 1974 and was buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia.
