Johann Oswald KERNICH

(5 March 1894 – 25 November 1970)

Johann Oswald Kernich was born on 5 March 1894 at Sutherlands, in the Kapunda district of South Australia, the son of Johann Friedrich Gustav Kernich and Ida Blondina Kernich.

Marriage and family

Johann Oswald married Sophie Elsa Kernich (née ROHRLACH), born 16 December 1896 at Angaston, daughter of Paul Wilhelm Rohrlach and Adelheid Rohr.

The couple lived in the Kapunda district during the late 1910s and were the parents of at least two daughters:

Beryl Esma KERNICH (born 24 January 1918, Kapunda)
Lorraine Mavis KERNICH (born 3 August 1919, Kapunda)

Occupation and civilian life

Civil and military records describe Johann Oswald as a chaff cutter and cattle feeder, experienced in rural and mechanical work. He was able to drive motor cars, conduct running repairs, and work with horse teams, skills typical of South Australian rural labourers of his generation.

He identified as Lutheran, a faith he maintained throughout his life.

World War II service (Volunteer Defence Corps)

Johann Oswald served during the Second World War with Australia’s home-defence forces, a vital but often under-recognised part of the war effort.

Service Number: S85560
Rank: Private
Unit: 10th (South Australia) Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC)
Enlisted: 11 February 1943, Freeling, South Australia
Discharged: 10 November 1945
At the time of enlistment he was 48 years old, married, and residing at Freeling, with Sophie Elsa Kernich recorded as his next of kin.

Medical and physical details

His enlistment medical records provide a rare personal snapshot:

Height: 6 ft ¼ in
Weight: 157 lb
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Dark brown
Complexion: Dark
Blood pressure: 140/100
Chest expansion: 40 inches
Johann initially received a Class III medical classification due to a right inguinal hernia, later reviewed by a Special Medical Board. Despite this, he was accepted for service and remained on strength.

These records show that, despite age and physical limitations, he volunteered and served faithfully on the Australian home front.

Service role

The Volunteer Defence Corps was responsible for:

guarding infrastructure and strategic sites
local defence and security
supporting regular Army units within Australia
Johann Oswald’s service reflects the crucial contribution made by older men who protected communities and vital resources while younger soldiers served overseas.

He is commemorated on the Freeling World War II Memorial, recognising his wartime service.

Later life, death, and burial

After the war, Johann Oswald later lived in New South Wales. He died on 25 November 1970, aged 76, and was buried at Walla Walla General Cemetery, Lutheran Section, Plot M27, Walla Walla, New South Wales.

Wife’s death

His wife, Sophie Elsa Kernich, later lived in Queensland, where she died on 12 September 1989, aged 92, and was buried at Beenleigh Cemetery, Section L05, Row 6, Grave 13.

Though buried in different states, their lives together reflect the migration of South Australian Lutheran families across Australia during the 20th century.
