75 years ago today, on the Monday morning of the 13th June 1949, Private Evan Daniel Jones, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1158), miner from 3rd Street, Pelaw Main, New South Wales and 29 Cleary Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and 84 Wilton Street, Merewether, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 77. ANGLICAN 3-166. 48.
Born at Rummy, Wales about 1872 to David Daniel and Mary Ann Jones; husband of Esther Jones nee?, married?, died 26.5.1920, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 57, from 29 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-48. 8., Evan enlisted on the 1st December 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 28.1.1917 (not stated), 18.4.1917 (not stated).
Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (gassed, Battle of Messines).
Commenced return to Australia 27.7.1917.
Evan arrived home on the 29th September 1917, being discharged medically unfit (overage and rheumatism) on the 29th October 1917.
Mr. Jones’s name has been inscribed on the Pelaw Main Public School and Citizens Roll of Honour Gates, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor.
I have placed poppies at Evan’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
