Lance Corporal Leon Rex Ward (Service Nos:S41269/SX16813) initially served with the ACMF as a Private from 19 September 1941 before enlisting in the AIF on 27 January 1942 with 3 Training Battalion. Private Ward was attached to 7 Ammunition Ordnance Coy on 7 August 1943 when he embarked with his Unit from Townsville for Milne Bay on board the Westralia. Private Ward embarked on 12 April 1944 from Finschafen for Townsville on board the Katoomba, and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 17 November 1944. Lance Corporal Ward was attached to 19 Ammunition Ordnance Coy at Discharge on 6 February 1946. Father Harry served in WWI and brother Medwyn in WWII.

Bill was born at Yorketown, South Australia in 1922, second of three children of Harry Ward (b1884 at Callington via Strathalbyn, South Australia) and Pearl Minola Pascoe (b1893 at Moonta Mines, South Australia). Harry served in WWI and was a Wharf Labourer in 1919, when he and Pearl married in Edithvburgh, where they settled and raised their family and Harry was a Wharf Labourer and Wickerworker.

Bill was a Butcher in Maylands, Adelaide when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. In 1945 in Maylands, he married Helen Sheila MacDonald (b1924 at Orrorroo via Carrieton, South Australia). In 1997 Bill and Helen were living at Mitchell Park in Adelaide (NAA) - Bill died in 2011 and Helen in 2012.
