Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Cyril Edward Crocker (Service No:5468; originally recorded as 5335) enlisted in the AIF on 18 January 1916, having served twelve months with the Senior Cadets in New Norcia, WA. Private Crocker was attached to 28th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for England on 7 August 1916 on board HMAT A28 Militiades. Private Crocker  was WiA in France on 24 April 1918 (GSW to his foot), and evacuated to England (Reading War Hospital. Private Crocker embarked from England for Fremantle on board HT Ormonde, and was attached to 28th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 7 September 1919. He served in the ACMF in WWII (Private; Service No:W74970).

Cyril was born in Kalgoorlie, WA in 1899, eldest of four children of Edward Henry Crocker (b1879 in Pekina, South Australia) and his first wife Jessie Core Irving (b1877 in Blanchetown, South Australia). Edward was a Miner in Kalgoorlie, WA in 1898 when he and Jessie married in Boulder. In the early 1900s they moved to Bunbury,  then Harvey and Dowerin where they raised their family and Edward was a Farm Hand. In 1910 Edward and Jessie separated, and divorced in 1916 - with disputes over custody of the children. Edward and Jessie both remarried - Edward in South Australia and Jessie at Midland in WA.

Cyril was working as a Farm Hand at New Norcia via Northam in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF - his mother wrote to the Army requesting the name of the person who gave permission for Cyril to enlist (custody dispute with Edward). Following his Discharge, Cyril worked as a Station Hand near Carnarvon and in the Murchison, and as a Prospector (blue asbestos) at Blue Spec and 29 Mile in Nullagine and Hamersley Range. In the early 1950s Cyril moved to Midland Junction, where he lived with his youngest sister Cora (a Teacher) and worked as a Builder's Labourer. Cyril died in 1971.
