Elder of two brothers (John and Malcolm) who served in WWII, Sergeant John William English (Service No:S75525) served in the ACMF with 5 Battalion VDC from 15 April 1942 to 5 May 1945.

Jack was born in Mount Gambier, South Australian in 1910, eldest of three children of William English (b1885 in Mount Gambier, South Australia) and Jessie Ann McLeod (b1884 in Melbourne, Victoria). William and Jessie married in 1910 in Melbourne. By 1915 the couple had settled in Mount Gambier, where they raised their family and William was a Motor Driver.

Jack was an Electrician - Jack English Radio and Electrical Service - in Mount Gambier in 1939 when he married Evelyn Christina Gowland (b1914 in Stawell, Victoria) - Evelyn was working as a Waitress in Mount Gambier. Jack and Evelyn settled in Mount Gambier, where Jack worked as an Electrical Contractor - he obtained an A Grade Electrical Mechanics Licence, issued by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, which allowed him to carry out electrical work of every description throughout Victoria (Trove). Evelyn died in 1977 and Jack died in 1978.
