Gilbert Hamilton embarked on the 20 of April 1915 to Gallipoli at Adelaide. The ship he embarked on was the HMAT Hororata A20. He was aged 38 and 10 months when he embarked and was a labourer. He was single and did not have any children. Hamilton was born in Dunedin New Zealand, but later moved to South Australia, specifically Oakland. Gilbert was 5 foot 7 and weighed 69.8kg with grey eyes, brown hair. He was a Roman Catholic, his chest was 87cm in diameter.
He disembarked on the 8th of July 1915. His was Taken on Strength to the 10th Infantry Battalion. While fighting in the trenches, he had a septic leg on the 1st of January 1916. He was shipped to an English hospital to get treated. After being treated, he marched into a depot on the 16th of February 1917. Hamilton was appointed as a Driver on the 16th of October 1917. Gilbert then asked to be reverted to Private at his own request on the 22nd of November 1917.
Gilbert was discharged on the 6th of July 1919. His total service time was 4 years and 174 days. By the time that Gilbert Hamilton departed the defence force, his rank was a Lance Corporal. On the 3rd of April 1924 he requested that the medals to be awarded to him awarded to him be posted. After he left the defence force, he moved to Broken Hill.
