Son of Mr Albert Richard RENTON of 4 Cottell Street, Solomontown, SA. Educated at Solomontown Public and Port Pirie High Schools he was fond of cricket and football. Once a member of the Commonwealth Railway Cricket Team and B Grade player for St. Mark's Football Club. In civilian life he was employed by Vacuum Oil Company at Port Pirie. Enlisted in February 1941, he received traiing in the Militia and Royal Australian Artillery at Fort Largs and left for overseas in April 1941 and saw action in the Middle East.
