West Adelaide Football Club involvement:
Thomas played 1 game for WAFC on 3 May 1919, then went on to play for Norwood in the 1922 Grand Final and was the SANFL leading goalkicker for 1922. Thomas played 2 State games in 1921 and 1922. He played for Carlton in the VFL in 1923.
Biographical details:
Thomas was the son of Patrick Hart and Bridget McInerney. His unit embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A19 Afric on 9 June 1916 and was sent to France on 25 November. He sustained a minor wound to his foot during action in the Battle of Messines, Belgium, on 16 June 1917, for which he was treated at Boulogne and later at Eastbourne Military Hospital, England. Thomas was granted leave from 10 July to 24 July 1917 and was then sent to the Training Brigade at Perham Downs in England in late September. Thomas was wounded at Salisbury Plains on 1 November. He was attached to the Signal School 10th Battalion until 23 March 1918 and rejoined the 43rd Battalion on 10 July. A bout of influenza resulted in being treated in the 3rd General Hospital from 2 August to 14 August. He contracted venereal disease and was treated for 52 days in Bulford Hospital in England from late April to mid- June 1919. Thomas returned to Australia on the Wiltshire on 16 June 1919 and was discharged on 2 October 1919.
Thomas enlisted at Wayville for military service in the Second World War. Assigned service number S213453, he served in the Army Citizen Military Force from 1939 to 1948. He died on 25 May 1971 and was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery at Daw Park, South Australia. 1
