Hocking was a pre-war regular, enlisting on February 7th, 1912 with the 1st Dragoons and Royal Scots Grey. He was an old contemptible of the B.E.F, and arrived in France on October 8th, 1914 with the 1st Dragoons. George recieved a gunshot wound in the jaw on June 2nd, 1915. Promoted to (unpaid) Lance Corporal on November 6th, 1915. He winded up transferring to the 14th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment on September 23rd, 1917. Wounded again in October 1917, he would leave France to England for the last time on October 30th, 1917. He was in England for the rest of the war.
He went to Australia after the war and joined the Australian Forces. He earned the rank of Temorary Warrant Officer Class two and served in mostly administrative roles throughout 1940-44.
