The Somerset Soldier
Harry Burgess was born in Shepton Mallet in Somerset in 1888, and as a young man became a Regular in the Somerset Light Infantry, and so part of The British Expeditionary Force (one of "The Old Contemptibles") into France in Sept 1914. He was an early casualty of the war and spent four years in German POW camps before being repatriated.
He and his young family emigrated to Adelaide South Australia in 1928, and with the outbreak of WWII he was an early volunteer (aged 51 !) for the AIF, and was put into guard duty service at Loveday POW camp in the Riverland.
