Don was born in Plympton, Adelaide, South Australia in 1922, younger of the two children of Stanley (Stan) Richard Whitrod (b1893 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Priscilla Victoria Blanche Langley (b1894 in Petersburgh, South Australia). Stan was a Farm Labourer in 1916 when he enlisted in the Army (Private; Service No:756), and he and Priscilla married in 1919 in Nangtika.
