When Helen May Cushion was born on 22 February 1920 in Port Clinton, South Australia, her father, Alexander, was 31, and her mother, Penzie, was 29. Helen May Cushion married Eric Clarence Clarke in Karoonda, South Australia, on 10 January 1948 when she was 27 years old after she had been discharged from the Australian Army in 1944. 

According to military records, Helen was 5ft 1 inches tall with brown eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. 

She had one daughter with Ivor Lawson Ackland who she married after her first husband passed away in the 1960's.

Helen died on 22 September 2010 in Kilmore, Victoria, at the age of 90, and was buried in Karoonda, South Australia.
