Private Verna Joy Wilson (Service No:SF113087) served in the AWAS with Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU) from 15 April 1943 to 18 September 1945 - graded Telephonist. Private Wilson's father, William (Private; Service No:414) served in WWI, and brothers Baxter and Gordon also served in the Military.

Verna was born in Kadina, South Australia in 1924, second of three children of William Leslie Wilson (b1899 in Maldon, Victoria) and his second wife Clarissa Nieman Roberts (b1896 in Malalla, South Australia). William (a Widow with two children) and Clarissa married in 1918 at Port Wakefield, South Australia. William had been a Restaurant Keeper and Butcher in Wallaroo before enlisting in the AIF in 1916. William and Clarissa lived in Kadina, Yorketown and Port Broughton, where they raised their family and William was a Butcher.

Verna worked as a Telephonist at Port Broughton before enlisting in the AWAS. In 1947 in Whyalla, Verna married Ernest (Bob) Robert Cantwell (b1918 in Lexton, Victoria). Bob worked as an Electrical Fitter in Melbourne before moving to South Australia. Verna and Bob settled in Whyalla, where they raised their family and Bob worked as a Mechanic. Bob died in 1990 and Verna in 1999.
